One of the expert in heritage building conservation,has recently advised that the owner of the old heritage buildings should not use any paint to paint the building. The use of the wrong paint will damage the building and destroyed the originality of the building. Recently there are many heritage shop houses which have been painted with bold color,e.g dark yellow, red, blue, which are not ordinary color of the buildings. For the long term benefits of conservation, it is better to heed to the advise of the experts.
Not only color painting; the putting up of promotion materials are not managed. Many signboards, lighting, wiring, and other promotional material; has blocked the view of the heritage buildings to show their beauty of their architecture. What can a tourists see when the buildings are blocked, and does not exposed the whole building design and architecture. If we observed carefully, there are old ways of putting promotion materials and name/sign boards.
The roof tiring of the buildings have also been changed; will it be better an original roof tiring is used?.
The change of window design, also spoiled the beauty of the old buildings.
Someone said this is raping of heritage buildings.....
To prevent fire from occurring in the heritage zone due to old wiring problem. A rewiring is required and necessary.
Building conservation need proper management; not for any ordinary contractors to do it. Hope that there is law for that purpose to protect the buildings. Otherwise we may lost our heritage buildings soon.......
We found that there are no systematic system in Penang for conservation and rebuilding of the heritage buildings in George Town. Hope that the state will take action fast, before any one doing the work without proper expert guidance, and compliance with the guideline for heritage buildings.
A strong monitoring system is still require to ensure the heritages are properly managed.
I have visited few UNESCO sites in China and Vietnam; Penang has left behind and slow to maximize the benefits of the status for tourism and conservation. We really need to act fast.......

亂用漆料上色失真又破壞‧古蹟區應拒“糖果屋”
（檳城）最近檳城出現越來越多的七彩繽紛“糖果屋”，商家把古跡建築物漆成強烈的艷麗色彩，希望能夠吸引顧客，以致古跡景觀遭受嚴重破壞。
超過60古屋漆艷麗色彩
喬治市文化遺產諮詢委員會成員陳耀威指出，包括非古跡區在內，超過60間檳城戰前建築物變成了色彩強烈的“糖果屋”，令他感到很惋惜。
他特別強調，把古跡建築物變成糖果屋的錯誤，最早出現在新加坡，錯誤的古跡保留訊息廣為傳播，後來新山、馬六甲、芙蓉、檳城到亞羅士打的許多建築物都變成光彩奪目的“糖果屋”。
仿古不成破壞古蹟氣氛
許多人認為這麼做是仿古，不料卻無知的破壞整個古跡區的氣氛，帶來令古跡愛護者感到恐怖的不和諧，及不協調。
馬六甲的紅屋原本不是紅色的，由於錯誤的認識，把白色改為紅色，反而喧賓奪主的以假亂真。
同樣的，張弼士故居原來是白色的，現在則漆成藍色。類似的狀況，在小印度更是泛濫成災。
陳耀威說，古跡建築物顏色失真是一個問題，由於塗料的改變，會帶來在錯誤的感觀印象之外，更嚴重的實體遭受破壞的危害。
陳耀威：能透氣水分可滲出
先賢塗料不破壞建築
陳耀威說，先賢使用的塗料很講究，它會生青苔，不過卻因為有透氣的功能，令水分可以滲出，使建築物不致遭受破壞，而能夠常久保存。
反觀化學漆，由於封住牆壁令它不能透氣，牆壁把水分抽上來之後，被谷在牆內，導致外層脫落，並出現結構不穩定狀況。
喬治市古跡結構較特殊
喬治市古跡的結構比較特殊，這裡過去是沼澤地帶，地下水豐富，建築物的結構必須讓抽上牆壁的地下水有去路，因此不能隨便使用化學漆。
先賢過去以石灰加上顏料，製成水灰漆，故以店屋為主的喬治市，過去建築物的色調以淺淡色為主，有白色、靛藍、土黃、淺青。
上世紀30至60年代從歐洲傳來了洗石子牆壁建築工藝，喬治市於是出現了大量的淺淡的石子原色建築物。
洗石子並非漆料，而是以水泥滲小石子抹牆，營造天然的小石子顏色。它永不脫色，不必上漆，只須清洗骯髒的牆壁。市區的七條路、八條路和愛民路便有許多這類建築物。
可惜的是，無知的業主把這類充滿特色的屋子漆上顏色，令它嚴重失真。
喬治市還有一種非常特別的畫假磚牆壁，牆上的磚塊色彩是畫上去的，並非真正的磚。這類牆壁出現令人驚喜的彩繪，顏色多變，包括鄉土味十足的土朱色和黑色。
由於畫假磚牆壁本身已上色，故不必油漆。可是，這類出現在古跡核心區觀音亭後、愛情巷和打銅仔街的假磚牆建築物，不但被塗上化學漆，也被抹上洋灰，把真正的藝術品給破壞了。
已婉拒油漆公司好意, 胡亂為古跡添色彩糟糕
胡亂的使用化學漆為古跡建築物添色彩是很糟糕的事。因此，包括陳耀威在內的喬治市世界文化遺產辦事處成員於1個月前會見準備免費為喬治市添色彩的ICI油漆（馬）有限公司。
這間公司於去年11月4日宣佈，將通過其子公司 ICI 油漆（馬）有限公司的Dulux品牌，為喬治市古跡區的建築物免費油漆。
有關成員謝絕了這間公司的好意，請求它不要隨便使用化學漆為古跡添色彩，不過新建築物沒有問題。
這家公司已被世界最大的油漆公司，荷蘭阿姆斯特丹的阿克蘇諾貝爾（AkzoNobel）收購，後者擁有可以透氣的漆料，適用於古跡建築物。如果使用合適的漆料，則無任歡迎。
